Get Relief From Your Migraines With Botox®

woman with aching headSevere throbbing pain. Sensitivity to light and sound. Nausea. These symptoms are common in those who suffer from migraines, which can be debilitating. Migraines can have a huge impact on someone’s daily life, especially if they suffer from chronic ones. People who experience migraines often cannot perform daily tasks and activities due to the intense head pain and other symptoms that accompany it.

More Than a Wrinkle Treatment

Mention Botox® and you likely think of wrinkle treatment for frown lines or crow’s feet. While this treatment can indeed reduce the signs of aging, it’s been shown to be effective for treating chronic migraines.

In 2010, OnabotulinumtoxinA, or Botox, was approved for adults with chronic migraines. That means you have both a history of migraine headaches and headaches (including tension-type) on 15 or more days of the month that last four hours a day or longer.

How Does It Work?

Botox injections are given around pain fibers involved in headaches. As Botox enters the nerve endings around the injection sites, it blocks the release of chemicals involved in transmitting pain.

What to Expect

Emily, our nurse practitioner, administers Botox injections here at the practice. Patients will point out to her the areas on their body where their headaches seem to originate, whether that be their neck, temple or other spots. Then those will be the areas that we’ll focus on. With Botox, it’s necessary to give several injections in the area or affected areas.

Within two weeks max, you should experience relief from your migraines and get the maximum benefit from the treatment. The effects should last for up to three months.
